RIGHTS OF TENANTS

SOLDIERS AND DEPENDENTS. Sir Francis Bell reported yesterday the result of the conference with the managers for the House of Representatives on the War Legislation Amendment Bill. The Council had considered that protection of soldiers, discharged soldiers, and [ their wives or widows as tenants of houses would tend to prejudice the I chances of such persons obtaining houses [in future. Therefore it had provided ; that they might contract themselves out ;of such protection. The House of Re- | prosentatives had wished to strengthen tho clause in favour of *!lie tenant, by providing that in a lease such as that proposed it must be proved that the tenant was aware oi its effect. Such a provision, in the opinion of the Council's managers, would make tho position of the future tenants worse. Therefore the Council's, managers hs^d agreed to abandon the amendment which permitted future tenants to contract themselves out of the protection. The persons protected would now have to take their chance of being comidered undesirable tenants. The Council approved the agreement of its managers.
