19th DECEMBER THE PROBABLE DATE

It is understood that the Wellington South by-election will take place on 19th. December, and that nominations will close oh Monday. The ballot to decide who shall be the Labour Representation Committee's candidate will "be held next Tuesday, and the result will be announced that evening. Nominations close to-morrow.. Mr.; M. J. Reardon, president of the Trades and Labour Council, has been nominated by that body; Mt. T. Brindle by the Social Democratic Party; and it is also understood that Mr.. R. Semple and Mir. W. T. Young are to be nominated. The method of selection of the Labour candidate on this occasion will be slightly different from that adopted on previous occasions. Members of the Party, or of organisations affiliated withthe L.R.C. who are resident within the electorial boundaries will have the right to vote, but not others. Previously all' memßers of organisations affiliated with the Labour Representation Committee have had a voice in the selection.

Messrs. George Frost and John Castile, who are members of the City Council, and Captain W. H. Hawkins, ex-M.P. for Pahiatua, have announced their intention of contesting the seat, and the Hon. T. W. Hislop is also mentioned as a likely candidate.

As the roljs will close at 6 p.m. on the day of the issue of the writ, it behoves every adult in the district to see that he or she has Been enrolled.

Mr. A. L. Monteath, secretary of the United Storemen's Union, has been selected by the Wellington Soft Goods. Employees'. Union and the Wellington United Storemen's Union to contest the selection ballot which is to be taken under the auspices of the Labour Representation Committee to-decide who shall be tlie Labour nominee for the Wellington South seat. . Mr. Monteath, who is well known in trade union circles, was closely connected with the calhpaign conducted in the Wellington South electorate by the late Mr. A. H. Hindmarsh.

THe Labour candidate for Palmerston North, it is understood, will be Mr. Alexander Galbraith, a resident of the district.
