Mr. Charles Zachariah, District Manager of the Public Trust Offlcej has been appointed a Justice of the Peace. The Avon Eiver banks question came before the Christchurch City Council again on Monday evening, when resolutions were received from the Council of Churches reaffirming its belief that the council "ought to cure the evil (of imimorality) by a proper scheme of lighting," and "in view of the- complaints voluntarily tendered by the proprietor of one.of the boat sheds licensed by the City Council concerning the use of boats for improper purposes at night, urging the council to revise the terms of license of boat, sheds so that the cause of complaint might be removed." The reading of the resolutions was greeted with laughter by councillors. The Electricity Committee reported to the council that the engineer proposed to erect forty additional lamps on the river bank between the hospital bridge and Fitz-gerald-avenue bridge. The cost was estimated at £1100. Tlie committee was prepared to erect the lamps provided the council would find the capital cost out of general account, and pay the electricity department the sum of £2 2s per annum for each lamp. The- reduction from £3 to £2 2s was being made to allow for the capital cost, which, would not be borne by the Department. The council referred the matter to the Finance Committee for report.
