Among the motions passed by the Advisory Board of Patriotic Societies this afternoon was one setting out that theY board was of opinion that it'is not prudent fdik.patriotic'societies' funds to be used to assist in building permanent soldiers' clubs. , ..-.•■■
Palmeiston North correspondent of The .'■ Post writes.: The,late Mr. Harry Baker, ' whose death took place at Pahnersfon . recently, was well known in the Nelson district in his early life. HewaS/'bom in Bendigo, 59 years ago, and came .to\ New Zealand as a boy, settling, with' other members of the family, in Kelson,, where he will be remembered as being proprietor, in conjunction with his bro-''; thera and brother-in-law, of an" extensive,, sash: and door factory and sawmills at' ; Nelson and Collingwood.. Twenty: years ■ ago the late Mr. Baker moved to Wa-,' nganui, where he engaged in farming, ■;. and two yoars later he arrived in Palmerston North, where he acquired. Tat-. ■ tersall's Stables, in lUngitikei-sireet, '}' and also conducted a. carrying business.. 1 He-went into the hotel business twelve , years ago, and conducted" houses at Ashhurst, Dannevirke, and Palmefston j North. He was proprietor of the Claren-;' don for six years, and was licensee of it at the time of his death. The late Mr. Baker had many friends, and, was noted for his great kindness and consideration - to those in distress. Five sons and a . wife, who is still lying serious ill are left to mourn their loss. ■ Messrs. B.
