LONDON, 17th November,
The Press Bureau reports: The Army Council has sent a message to Sir Douglas Haig, as follows:-^
"On the occasion of the happy termination of hostilities the Army Council congratulates all ranks of the British Army in France upon their magnificent share in 1 the series of brilliant actions which contributed so powerfully to the gradual wearing down and the final submission of the enemy. Since August, 1914, the British .Expeditionary Force has grown from the small but highlyefficient contingent "which acquitted itself with such renown at Mons, the Marne, the Aisne, and at Ypres, to a great army. During the last four months this army waged on a front of many miles unceasing battle, and has every day won new glories for its standards. Through four checkered yeais of conflict the same spirit of cheerfulness, stoicism, and gallantry which our forefathers constantly displayed was again shown in the glorious taJe of daily achievements which is the canse of the Empire's pride and rejoicing to-day."
'To Field-Marshal Sir Douglas Haig, the commander who had led to decisive victory over a formidable and skilful foe the mightiest army ever sent forth to battle from the Empire, to all officers from the highest to the lowest, to all rank and. file who have borne the burden of the campaign undaunted by discomfort, wound*, sickness or death, also to those whose unceasing labour behind the lines smoothed the working of the machine to victory, the Army Council tenders its tribute of admiration and gratitude, hoping under God that the mighty work which brought a, victorious conclusion on tHe battlefield may ensure for the Empire future honour, prosperity, and peace."
