SERVICE CHEVRONS
REGULATIONS FOR ISSUE.
Regulations for the award ■of chevrons to denote service overseas since 4th August, 1914, are published in General Orders. The following will be eligible to participate in the, award:—(l) Officers and other ranks of the New Zealand Expeditiona.ry Force. (2) Members of the New Zealand Army Nursing Service. (3) Members of the New Zealand .Sectioli of the • Women's Auxiliary Corps. ■ (4) Members of the New Zealand Voluntary' Aid Detachment (including Nurses, General Service, and Motor Transport V.A.D.s). As the Women's' Auxiliary Corps and the Voluntary Aid Detachment are formed in England, only those members thereof who left New Zealand for service since ttia, commencement of war, or were in England on the outbreak of. war and whose homes are in New Zealand and who are: serving overseas, are eligible for the award. The date for'the award of the first chevron will be.the date.of embarkation from. New Zealand for service abroad, save in the case of those who joined- the New Zealand Expeditionary Force subsequent to their. leaving. New Zealand, in. which case ilia date,..o.f the award will be the date of their so joining the 'New Zealand. Expeditionary Force. Officers and other ranks transferred to the New Zealand Expeditionary Force from British' units will be allowed to reckon former service. ,An additional chevron will be awarded for each successive aggregate period of twelve months served overseas, which period need not be continuous. Officers and other ranks from the Do.niinion on duty of a temporary nature who are not appointed for duty in the establishment of a unit of: the New Zea land Expeditionary Force are not eligible for the award of chevrons by virtue of their temporary service outside the Dominion. Periods of absence without leave, .imprisonment, detention, hospital, treatment, or sick leave due to avoidable ■causes, or periods of captivity as a prisoner of war, will.be excluded when calculating- the twelve months .required to qualify for an additional chevron. ■ The first chevron, if earned on or before the 31st December, 1914, will be red; if earned on or after the, Ist January, 1915, wili be blue. AH additional chevrons will be blue. . . '
Chevrons may be worn on plain clothes' by retired officers, ex-officers, ex-sol-diers, and others, who Would, had they remained in the service have been entitled to wear them on uniform clothing. As the chevrons areto be regarded as a distinction to be worn on uniforms denoting service overseas, and not.as a reward, no ■posthumous award will be -^c. ■■■ ■ ■ ■.. ■ ' . . .;■;■■ ■ ■; :.;
