THE KAISER AND WELLINGTON CENTRAL
TO THE EDITOR.
Sir,—l read with interest a .recent leading article in your paper proclaiming, rather agitatedly, it seemed to me, that a vote for any candidate other than Mr. Hildreth'would be a vote for the Kaiser. Picking up a copy of the Christchurch Sun—a paper whose editor certainly does not think of Labour men in terms of eulogy—l found that paper, saying editorially Te Wellington Central: — "Citizens' are warned, as they in ( the previous by-election, that a vote 'withheld from the win-th'e-war representative will mean a vote for the Kaiser. That is a stale slogan, arid so much cant. It is not an honest statement of the position. The cause of Prussianism will not be enhanced in the slightest if Mr. Hildreth is; defeated. ... The defeat of the Coalition elect, if it so happens, will represent not so much a vote of confidence in the Kaiser as a vote of noconfidence in a weak and paltering Administration. Hence the anxiety (and the .humbug]l of the Government's editorial apologists . . It is 'taking an ab-' surdly extreme view to suggest that if, Mr. Fraser tops the poll the Entente world will stand aghast at out patriotic backsliding."
The Sun's summing up of the. position so positively fite the case that I could not resist sending it along for publication. The. question is:, "What -answer;.has The. Pest.to the Sun's indictment?—l'am. etc.
