The only candidates now in the field 1 are Mt. J. S. Connett, chairman of ; the County^ Council, the selected' National candidate, and Mr. Sydney Smith, .son of the late Mr. E. M. Smith, ex-mem-ber for Taretnaki, who stands as 'a Democrat and is- backed by the local Labour organisations. Mr. P. Fitzherbert, who announced his candidature oh behalf of Labour,' has retired and 1 become Mr. Smith's chairman of committees: ';
