BRITISH ATTACK ON WIDE FRONT
HARD FIGHTING NORTH-WEST OF ST. QUENTIN
The High Commissioner reports: —
LONDON, 27th September, 11.50 a.m. Sir -Douglas Haig reports: South of the Sensee River, at 5.20 this morning, we attacked on a 'wide front. Satisfactory progress is reported. (Received September 28, 9.30 a.m.) NEW YORK, 27th September. The British have launched an offensive in the direction of Gambrai, and have advanced three miles on a thirteen-mile front. The troops are within three miles of Cambrai. They have captured 6000 prisoners. " The British have crossed the Canal dv Nord' defences on a front of three miles. (Received September 28, 10 a.m.) LONDON, 27th September. Sir Douglas Haig reports : During the past- few days the First and Sixth Divisions of the Ninth Army Corps, under Lieutenant-General Braithwaite, captured by hard fighting but at small cost an intricate system of trenches, strong points, woods, and villages, north-west of St. Quentin, besides taking fifteen hundred prisoners. Enemy counter-attacks were repulsed with great gallantry and determination.
