LATE SPORTING

THE CHELMSFORD STAKES

GLOAMING'S STRIKING DISPLAY,

CnmTED PB»S» ASSOCIATION.—COPTMGHT.)

(Received September 16, 11 a.m.)

SYDNEY, This Day.

The Daily Telegraph says: "Gloaming's win in the Chelmsford Stakes' was one of the most striking displays of galloping ever seen at Randwick. He behaved somewhat unkindly at the post, and lost some lengths by slipping when half-way round, but from that point he settled down to work nicely and assumed control before the horses reached the home turn. Once in the straight he left.the others as if they were standing.' It was a remarkable performance, as Gloaming is understood never to have been in a race before."

No one was more pleased at the form shown by Gloaming than the handicapper (Mr. Daly). He called on Gloaming to concede weight in the Novice Handicap to a number of horses w%o had some form, and Gloaming was promptly scratched. Mr. Daly took the view that if he was wrong in estimating Gloaming's ability, it was better to spoil his chances in the Novice Handicap than weight him in a way that would quite spoil the race if his estimate, of this galloper proved correct. . ■'.■■■'■ The writer in the Telegraph speaks favourably of Gloaming's Derby expectations, and adds :'"Apparently Gloaming had not given any evidence of his remarkable galloping powers when the entries closed for the Epsom, Metropolitan, and the two cups, otherwise he might have got into one or more of these races in a way that would have been a nightmare to the weight-adjusters."
