NEED FOR POWERFUL BANKS.

(Received September 16, 8.30 a.m.) % LONDON, 15th September. Sir Edwardl Hoklen, addressing the shareholders of thfe London Midland Bank, stated that three .hundred, million sterling was required after the war to finance the reconstruction of industries, purchase raw materials, and for the expansion of trade. Powerful amalgamated banks were more than ever needed to meet the new requirements and maintain London as the world's centre of finance. Germany was extensively amalgamating her banks as a preparation for a financial war. The British banks must build up their credit more largely and import gold, of which the world's production was declining.
