H.M.S. DRAKE
REPORTED SUNK BY A
SUBMARINE

MELBOURNE, This Day. It is announced that the battleship Drake, which was the last flagship on the Australian Station, has been sunk by a torpedo from a German submarine, and that nineteen of the .crew were killed.
[H.M.S. Drake,' an armoured cruiser of 14,100 tons, will be remembered by many New Zealand people, as she visited the Dominion while on the Australian Station. The above report of her having been sunk requires explanation, for she was torpedoed off the north coast of Ireland, with the loss of one officer and eighteen men, on 2nd October last year. She reached harbour, and then sank in shallow water. If it is correct that she has been sunk again, the vessel must have been salved and restored to service. The Drake, which was built at Pembroke and completed in 1902, carried about 900 men. She was armed with two 9.2-inch, sixteen 6-inch, and twelve 12-pounded guns, and had a speed of 24 knots.] '
