MAORIS ARRESTED,

AUCKLAND, 19th August. On Saturday a party of police visited a Maori pa at Mercer, with the intention of apprehending Maoris who had failed- to parade for medical examination. Before the visit of the police a large party of Maoris of apparently military age were seen to board a launch and proceed down the Waikato River. . The police at the pa questioned a number of men of military age, three of whom refused jto give their names, and'they were arrested. Subsequently they were convicted and fined £1 each, and their names were then forthcoming. One.of them was found to bo wanted by the military authorities as a defaulter, and after paying the fine was again arrested.

Four other Maoris alao found in the pa were arrested, but. they refused to walk, and were carried out of tho pa. They were taken- to the railway station in a motor-car and thence to Auckland, and handed over to the military authorities. '
