DEMAND FOR A CONFERENCE

(BX TELEGRAPH.—PRESS ASSOCIATION.)

AUCKLAND, This Day. The executive of the United Federation of Labour passed a motion expressing the opinion that it is the duty of the Government to insist that a conference regarding the coal dispute shall take place, and that the Government has abundant powers to do this.

The Amalgamated Society of Carpenters and 'Joiners (Wellington Branch) has resolved: "That, New Zealand being threatened with a crisis in the coal industry, the Government should call a compulsory conference between the mineowners and the representatives of the miners for the purpose of discussing the matters in dispute, and, further, that in the interests of the people of Now Zealand the coal industry should be Stateowned, and controlled from the mines to the consumers."
