NEW ZEALAND WOOL
IMPERIAL GOVERNMENTS
PROPOSAL.
CBI TBLBGRAPH.—PBBSS ASSOCIATION.) CHRISTCHURCH, 15th August. At the annual meeting of the Canterbury Sheep Owners' Union to-day the Chairman (Mr. W. W. M'Rae) said that in view of the large accumulations of unshipped produce and the shortage of shipping, it was in the interests of sheepownars to accept the suggestion of ■the Hon. D. H. Guthrie (Minister of Lands), that the Imperial Government commandeer of wool should extend for at least one year after the end of the war. In regard to the disposal of wool profits, Mr. E. Newman, M.P., had submitted a proposal that profits accruing ■to sheep owners from the resale of New Zealand wool during the currency of the commandeer, should be handed to dependents of the men of the British Navy and mercantile marine, killed or injured during the war. Mr., Newman's patriotic suggestion had the approval of sheep fanners generally, but the question had been raised as to whether it would not be better to defer passing a resolution on that matter until more definite information was received as to what surplus profit, if any, accrued from the wool in question.
The meeting decided to approve the proposal that the Imperial Government'? commandeer of New Zealand woo! should extend for one year after 30th June following the declaration of peace. and to recommend that the meat contract by the Imperial .Government be extended in the same way.
