Tho first detailed accounts, of the participation of the cavalry in the early stage of the battle state that the capture of Harbonnieres was a notably dashing feat. 1 The village was strongly defended with machine-guns, and a direct attack was useless. The cavalry was ordered to make a wido detour with a view to reaching Vauvillers, behind Harbonniei'es. The plan succeeded almost without a casualty. Vauvilliers .was seized with 700 prisoners, and Harbonin'eres, thus takeii in tho rear, was easily captured. '
