OSTEND AND ZEEBRUGGE

SOME R.N.V.R. OFFICEBS.

(ntoic otra own coshespokdbsi.)

LONDON, 31st May.

It was surmised that a good many New Zealanders serving intheß.N.V.B. (the Motor Boat Patrol) would be keen to volunteer their services for the recent big naval raids off Ostend and Zeebrugge, particularly as some of them were known to be stationed at the Dover base. That this surmise has proved correct is borne out by the following* names of which I have obtained possession. The list does not pretend to be a complete one, but it will be interesting to New Zealanders, at any rate, to know that so many of their naval "boys" did take part. Auckland was represented by Lieutenants M. S. Kirkwood, E. A. Kirkwood, G. Thome George, and Sub-Lieutenant A. Carnahan; Wellington by Lieutenants W. A. B. Jones, T. Turnbull (who received promotion for his services), and H. Le Pine; Cbristchurch by Lieutenant G-. L. Handcock; and Picton by Lieutenant A. G-. Jackson. All these officers were on motor launches. Others on coastal motoT boats were :— Auckland, Lieutenants W. A. Wilson and F. J. Treanor; Christchurch, ■' Lieutenants D. E. J. MacVean and S. P. Simpson. In addition, as I mentioned by a previous mail, C.M.M-. E. V. Smith, R.N.V.E. (Dunedin), was a volunteer of the boat that entered Zeebrugge and rescued the crew of the block-ship, Thetis, as well as some of the crew of the Intrepid. While, in the engagement at Ostend, he assisted in the smoke screen.
