Wellington people are bemoaning the turn of weatKer which has brorght so many days of bitingly cold wind, but conditions here, in comparison with those holding in other parts of the Dominion, have been almost 1 enjoyable. A paragraph in a recent issue of the Taranald Herald states that in the seven weeks since sth June, only one day had passed on which no rainfall was registered, that day being the 3rd July. Two first-offending inebriates were dealt with in the usual manner at the Magistrate's Court this morning by Mr. J. G. L. Hewitt, S.M. Patrick Sinnott was charged with drunkenness, refusing to quit the Greshani Hotel when requested to do so, and wilfully damaging a police helmet valued at ,13s. Constable Phillips ' stated that when first arrested Sinnott g.ivo no trouble, but when he was put in a car, preparatory to being removed to the station, he became very violent, and in the melee that followed the helmet was damaged beyond all possibility of further use. Inspector Marsack' said that unfortunately Sinnott had a "list," but, on the other hand, he was a man who had served his country well, and had returned a cripple. He asked that the man's good service should be set off against his list of offences against the law. This the Magistrate agreed to take into consideration, and for drr 'tenness Sinnott was convicted ; aaid discharged, and on the second count he was given the option of■ paying a fine of 30s or going to gaol for a week. He was also ordered to male good the damage he had done. Mr. A. T. Trendlo will sell to-morrow, at 1.30 p.m., at tho Central Auction Rooms, 53, Cuba-street, two bulldogs, pianos, furniture, etc! Messrs. C. W.
