HARBOUR CONTROL

MEETING OF THE BOARD

Matters affecting control of the Port of Wellington were discussed at a meeting of the Harbour Board last night. Mr. C. E. Daniells presided, and others present were: —Messrs. A. M'Farlane, J. G. Cobbe, M. W. Welch, J. W. M'Ewa-n, R. E. Sinclair, R. Fletcher, M. Cohen, W., Cable, R. A. Wright, M.P., W. WalTis, J. G. Harkness, A. H. Hindmarsh, M.P., and. Captain C. M'Arthur. The financial statement presented wae as follows: —

Bank Pass Books: Current Account, credit ba1ance,.£58.259 15s 3d; Imprest Account, credit balance, £2202 Is Id; ■on fixed deposit, £60,000. Payments: For interest, sinking fund, accounts, and wages. £44,967 Oe 7d; for salaries for July, £1050 ss; total payments, £46.017 5s 7d.

The Chairman reported that after consultation with the employees, the tender of Messrs. A. Levy, Ltd., had been accepted for the supply of uniforms for twelve months ending 30th June, 1919, and the tender of Messrs. Charles Hill and Son had been accepted for tho supply of uniform caps for the same period. The recommendations of the Wharves and Accounts Committee, as follow, were adopted' by the board:— To fix 12 (noon), Monday, 2nd September. 1918, as time and date for public drawing: at the offices of the board of fifty-one (51j debentures of £100 each of the board's £850.000 consolidated loan for redemption 28th February. 1919; to appoint Mr. Thomas Shailer Weston to act as Notary Public at the drawing; and to authorise the secretary to insert the necessary advertisement.'

To adopt the engineer's report recommending that the following works be put in had forthwith:—(a) Foundations for works and maintenance supplies store, Waterloo-quay; (b) foundations for cargo shed at head of Tarana-ki-street Wharf.

Tn reply to a question the engineer (Mr. J. Marchbanks) said that the time when the caTpo ehed would' he completed would depend on the ability to get steel for the roof. Several members laid emphasis on the importance of this work. Mr. Fletcher remarking that it was one of the most important works being undertaken by the board.
