S.S. WAITEMATA
SUNK IN, EUROPEAN WATERS
ALL HANDS SAVED.
The Naval Advisor' reports that the Union Steam Ship Company's steamer Waitemata has been sunk in European, waters. Fortunately, there was no loss of life. All hands were safely landed.
The Waitemata was a steel screw eteamer of 5432 tons gross, and was built in 1908 by W. Hamilton and Co., of Glasgow, for tho Union Steam Ship Company. Her princip^ dimensions wore:—Length, 4lsft; breadth, 54ft; and depth, 17.6 ft. Tbe Waitemata made her first appearance at Wellington on 14th August, JISOB. She was very, similar in construction to the Wairuna and the Waihora, but differed in one respect. She had. a greater number of hatches,, which naturally gave her a large cargo carrying capacity. She was fitted with all the latest appliances, and was able to make 11 knots ~per hour, with only a moderate consumption of coal.
