LABOUR'S NEW HOME.

The Trades and Labour Council is to be congratulated on its decision to purchase, the Vivian-street property for the purpose of establishing a permanent j home for Labour in Wellington. The ! late Dr. Martin's residence can easily be converted into a number of suitable offices, and the area is sufficient to allow i of the proper development of the bigger scheme—the erection in brick of a. substantial Trades' Hall. Up to the pre sent the unions have not been very lib eral in their, support of the Trades' Hall Building Fund, and the money in hand has been almost wholly absorbed. Now that a definite scheme has been decided upon, it is probable that money will be forthcoming much more freely, and it is ; anticipated that the necessary funds will not be lacking. An appeal is made to (he unions to support the scheme in every way, particularly financially, and one 'proposal is that there should be a levy of 2s 6d each upon union members. Such a levy would bo of great benefit j and would -not fall very hard on tho individual. The idea will be given further consideration. A special effort will bo made this year in connection with the Labour Day celebrations, tho funds from which will, as in the past, be devoted to the Trades' Hall Fund. Last year the fund benefited considerably, anil if everybody works enthusiastically, as they should do, there is no reason" why the - takings this year should not bo doubled. The money is needed -now more than, -ever before. I
