Mr. S. E. M'Carthy, S.M., considered police and bylaw cases at the Magistrate's Court to-day. Three first-offending inebriates were each ordered to forfeit 20e, tho amount of the bail allowed them. James Rothery, a second offender, was given the choice between paying a fine of 20s or going to gaol for a week. Thomas Biley, who is charged with the theft of twelve pairs of silk stockings, valued at £6, the property of some perboii or persons unknown, was further remanded till Wednesday next. On. the application of Mr. H. F. O'Leary, bail was renewed in the sum of £50. William Conrick admitted a breach of a prohibition order issued against him. A fine of £5, with costs 7s, in. default a month in gaol, was imposed. For having left a dray unattended in the city, David Leslie Burns was penalised in the sum of 10s, with costs 76, in default seven days in the cells. Police evidence was given that a motor-car, found to be owned by Charles Cross, was left standing for a period of two hours in Ballance-street without j lights a night or two ago. Cross wa^ this morning fined £2, and costs 17s 6d, in default a week in gaol. Percy Patterson, who had' driven a motor-car without a tail light, must pay a fine of £1, with 17s 6d costs. For having driven a motor-car at an excessive speed, Alfred Ings was ordered to pay a fine of £2, with costs 17s 6d. When the case against Ernest Thawley was called, Mr. J. O'Shea said that the defendant's car had been left in the street all niglit through an oversight. A fine of 10s, with costs Ife 6d, was inflicted. A number of owners of stock were, proceeded against for having allowed horses or cattle to wander in city or suburban streets. William Henry Ballinger was fined £1, with costs 17s 6d, and Thomas Hitchcock was penalised in a like amount on- each of two charges, penalty for default of each fine being fixed at seven days in tho cells. Ernest Hadley and Morrice Hasler must pay fines of 10s, with costs 17s 6d, and Walter Restieaux and L. Thomson (there being two charges against the latter) 30s, with cost 6 17s 6d, in default » week in gaol on each, charge.
