WAR SPIRITS

TO THE EDITOR,

Sir, —"The "thinking perssm is wondering why "Merchant's" band of fellow patriots do not call him off and place him on the retired list. Reiteration is one of the best known effects of the commodity under discussion. This is probably the reason why ("Merchant" repeats the gross and foolish libel that liquor saved Britain rom the "vile Hun." (It may have saved the Empire from "Merchant's" stigma of being called a sober nation). "Merchant's" present nora de plume, with very little alteration, would stand liim in good stead if the "vile Hun" happened to get into the South Pacific, viz., kamerad whisky. "Merchant" would save him from being punctui'ed with a German bayonet, procure him an iron cross, and possibly a life pension. As "Merchant" lias no fresh arguments, and indulges so largely in personalities, I do not propose encouraging him to waste any more of your space.—l am, etc.,

It. G. DBNTON,

17th July
