At yesterday's meeting of the Wellington Board of Education, when reference was made to the retirement of the chairman, Mr. London said he hoped, as he believed, that Mr. Aitken would in the j responsibilities as a public man continn-' ing with him, be found championing the cause of education and defending boards,, , whose existence was menaced by enemies jto the democracy. Referring later to this j matter, Mr. Aitken said: " I think it will be a huge mistake on the !part of Parliament if it ever thinks of; doing away with education boards. My' feeling is that they are filling, and competently filling, a fully needed and worthy position in the education system ;of the country. (Applause.) And they, ; could do much better were they given a , little more freedom. Instead of that, their resconsibilities are being curtailed by the Department. This I cannot think would bo an advantage to the schools or education staffs; indeed, under the Department they would not be anything like as comfortable as they have been under the boards." (Applause.) At the meeting of the TrinitjrJSethod-' ist Literary and Debating Society last evening, the subject was a symposium on "The Most Useful Creature In the World." The voting, by a good majority, gave woman the first place. At tho next meeting Chaplain Read will deliver a lecture on: "Round the World in a. Hospital Ship."
