EDUCATION BOARD

MONTHLY MEETING.

The monthly meeting of the Education Board, held to-day, was attended by the Hon. J. G. W. Aitken (chairman), Messrs. R. M-Callum, M.P., A. W. Hogg, T. Forsyth. T. Moss, E. H. Penny, G. London, *E. P. Rishwortli, and W. H. Field, M.P.

The statement of- accounts showed payments authorised since last meeting, £15,407 16s lOd, and cash in bank at 13th July £1426 9s 2d; deposits, £1100; Government grants due £8774 8s Bd.

A deputation, representing 'Berhampave householders waited upon the board to protest against the erection of a new infants' department on the grounds of the "Britannia-street School, which were already too small. In reply, the Chairman stated that the board would also like to see the new department erected elsewhere.^ and had suggested the purchase of a piece of land in Adelaide-road, but the Government had authorised a grant of £1900 on condition that the school was erected on the present site. The board woulu bring the' views of the deputation before the Education Department.

A communication from the Christchurch Education- Board as to grants for relieving teachers and conditions of sick leave to teachers, was, on the motion of Mr. M'Callum, referred to the Executive Committee to draw up a finding on the matter. A letter was received from the Marlborough School Committees' Association, expressing appreciation of the treatment accorded to the Marlborough schools since the amalgamation of the districts.

Improvements at Te Aro Main School and the Infants' School, totalling £122 Ss, were_ approved in accordance with the architect's report. It was resolved that the- executive visit Muritai to inspect proposed school sites.

The offer of a section at Ballance for a school site at S4O was approved. Tho offer of a site by Mr. Walker at Thorndon was declined.
