CROWDED TRAMS

TO THU EDITOR. Sir, —The overcrowding on trains and the trouble with coal' is not confined tc Wellington City alone, but in some parts of the Old Country the conditions are evidently nearly as bad as here. In a recent issue of the Board of Trade Journal there was a very useful suggestion made in connection with this matter to enable an efficient service for industrial traffic to be maintained. Between 5 o'clock and 6 are our customary hours for closing down here. The suggestion made by this journal is that innlead of having an overwhelming rush at the closing ■ hour, a. system should be arranged whereby adjacent workn and the departments of the same works might discharge a portion of thoir employees at 6 o'clock,. another at 6.10, and another at 6.20, thus spreading the traffic and facilitating the more economic sunning of the car 'service. As a- very considerable portion of the users of the trams between 5 and 6 o'clock are Government employees, it might quite easily be arranged that all Government Departments commence work at 8.30 a.m. and leave at 4.20 p.m. This would re- ■ Ueve the Wellington trams between E and 6 very considerably.—l am, etc.. STRAPHANGER. 15th July.
