CENTRAL CHAMBER OF COMMERCE

Mr. C. M. Luke presided at a meeting of the council of the Wellington Central Chamber of Commerce, held yesterday.

Messrs. C. M.* Luke and A. Leigh Hunt reported upon the work of the conference held at Palmerston North in June in connection with the Mangahao hydroelectric scheme. The joint opinion was that the conference was most representative, . and ihose present were highly enthusiastic. A league had been formed, with a live executive and a, live secretary, and there was no reason why the league should not do as much for the Mangahao scheme as the Auckland league did for the Main Trunk line. A contribution of £2 2s to the funds of the league was approved. The Secretary of the General Post Office (Mr. W. R. Morris), in reply to a communication from the chamber, stated that the latest clearing of the boxes at Newtown, Oourtenay-place, and Te Aro would be 7 p.m. The new arrangement for the closing of mails was brought into operation for the- purpose of eliminating overnight work, .»nd with that object in view it would be impossible to effect a later delivery. The reply was not considered altogether satisfactory, and a deputation was appointed to wait upon Mr. Moms at an early date.

It was reported that Professor Hunter had agreed to give a lecture on "Economies' ' to a general meeting of the chamber. The date is to be arranged later. An invitation to attendHhe lecture will be extended to the Accountant Students' Association. / > ;. The Workers' Educational Association wrote, thanking the chamber for its generous offer of the use of the meetingroom for classes and general meetings. Pending certain negotiations, the ; final acceptance of the offer was deferred. The matter of essential goods and shipping apace was referred to the Shipping Committee.
