RESPONSIBILITY FOR DEFEAT
COMMAND DID NOT USE ITS BEST EFFORTS. j ' (Received July 15, 11 a.m.) •' !'■■■■ ROME, 14th July. General Cadorna's dismissal followed a searching enquiry into'the Italian debacle in October, when the Germans' broke through at Caporeto. Generals Cadorna, Porro, and Capello were held ! responsible for the defeat. General Cadorna's appointment to the Versailles Council has been withdrawn. It is understood that the enquiry decided that General Cadorna, did not put forth the utmost staunchness against the Austrian, and it is suggested 1, that his staff was under the influence of the Austrian clerical party. . '
[General Cadorna. was Commander-in-Chief of the Italian Armies until his rcH mbval after, the severe defeat suffered Wy Italy on the Isonzo at the end of last year, when his front was broken in the mountains about Tolmino, and lie was forced to retreat to the Piave.
