It was believed that the launch would be suitable at Napier for pilot work in place of a boat that is considered unsafe. Tho harbourmaster re ported favourably, and recommended the purchase of the Dunedin boat and the board decided to purchase provided the boat was insured by the sellers for the trip up the coast. This was not agreed to, and the boat was sold to a. private buyer, who then offered it again to the board at the sue mciiey, the boat to bo delivered in Dunedin. The board offered to^ buy the boat if delivered in Napier. Advico fias now been received that yet another peTson has taken over the launch, which is now not for sale. The board, at its meeting on Tuesday,' set up a committee, consisting of tho chairman and Messrs. McCarthy and Creagh, to purchase a suitable boat NAPIER INNER HARBOUR Speaking at Tuesday's meeting of the Napier Harbour Board Mr. B. B. Creagh drew attention to the harbourmaster's report, where it was stated that the depth of water between •the piers was consistently decreasing (states the Telegraph). Mr. Creaph urged that it was only a question of time when tho inner harbour would he blocked up entirely. At present, he said, it was impossible to bring any boat in which was drawing not less than 15ft, and there was danger to boats coming in unless their draught was much less than 15ft. The chairman said it was incorrect to say tho channel was silting up. - There certainly ■were patches of silt in the channel, but the <jreuge was able to cope with them. There ■was a. great deal of silt moving, and one patch had given a great deal of trouble, hut generally there had been n great deal of improvement in the depth of water between the piers. While the board's operations were in progress thero would he a great deal of silt coming down stream The Niagara, which arrived at Auckland from [Vancouver on Tuesday, brought 2032 tons of cargo. The vessel sailed on Tuesday evening for Sydney On return from The Brothers, Jackson Head lieacon, and Tory Channel tile Hlnemoa will remain in Wellington for a week to _ have her pleted the vessel will sail for the other Cook Strait lighthouses The Kennedy, which left Wellington yesterday for Nelson, is to undergo her annual overhaul at that port. The vessel will later come on to Wellington to go on the Patent Slip From the 2nd May to the stl\ June the arrivals at the port of Napier totalled '67, 45 being at the inner harbour, 19 at the breakwater, and 3 in the roadstead. The Ngatoro, drawing 15ft lin, was the vessel with the greatest draught to enter the inner liarhour, while the Wimmcra and Monowai, each drawing 21ft, drew the most at the breakwater j A notable piece of ship surgery is reported ' in the American press to have been recently nerformed by the Robins Dry Dock and Repair Company at their Erie Basin establishment at New York (states Syren and Shipping). A steel ship of 23(10 tons entered the dock at 11 a.m. to be lengthened 52ft, and at 4 p.m. the following afternoon she began to receive the additional matter, the fore and aft sections having been cut apart and pulled in 29 hours
