He ridiculed the idea that the Americans were turning the scales in favour of the Allies. Could anybody imagine he said, the invincible German Army, which had defeated the greatest armies of Europe, with the addition of Canadians, Australians, and Asiatics, retreating before the Americans? Herr yon Payer (Imperial Vice-Chancelior), in an interview with the Vienna paper Neuo Freie Presse, said tltnt after the war European peace would remain m the hands of Austria and Germany, and it would be in good hands.
