It is hoped that the overhaul of the latter vessel will be completed by to-night, but in the event of it not being so, the Opawa will have to go up on the Slip again on Saturday. Another applicant for a position ■on the Slip is the Westport Harbour Board's 1 dredge Eileen Ward, which is due to arrive here about the 21th February PERSONAL Captain McLeod has rejoined the Northern Company's steamer Clansman,- and Captain Paris, who has been relieving him, has rejoined the Rimu. Captain Norbury has rejoined the Manila, relieving Curtain Dorling, who has taken charge of the Chelmsford THE INVERCARGILL The overhaul of the Invercargill is not yet completed, and it has now been fouud necessary to send the vessel to Lyttolton. This-, action was decided upon as the slips at Wellington and Wanganui will be occupied for some days. The vessel is expected to return from the southern port on Wednesday next. Thfl Blenheim will make a run to Wanganui to-morrow . AUSTRALASIAN HARBOURS In a paper, "The Improvement of Sea Communication," read before the London Chamber of Commorce, Lord D'Abernon (Chairman of the Dominions' lloyal Commission) stated:— In Australia there were two first-class ports as regards depth, viz., Sydney and Hobart, and no special expenditure would be' necessary at either. Melbourne undoubtedly presented a difficulty. A rocky ledge at the entrance to Port Phillip Bay had to be blasted away before deep draught vessels could enter. He put' down £400,000 as the cost of deepening Melbourne harbour and its approaches. At Adelaide the problem was simply one of dredging, and where the expenditure of a further £600,000 would probably be enough to deepen the channel, and provide two berths of the requi- • site depth. With regard to New Zealand, there-are already two harbours—Auckland and Wellington—which need but very little further expenditure, not more than £50,000 for both ports, to provide.for vessels of 38ft draught. At Dunedin and Lyttelton the cost was rather §reater, and perhaps a further £500,000 would aye to be expended at these two ports The Monowai is to sail for Lyttelton and Dunedin at 4 o'clock to-morrow afternoon
