TRAINING COLLEGE

PAST YEAR'S WORK.

The annual report of the Principal of the Wellington Teachers' Training College, presented to the Education Board, states that last year began with 120 students on the^ roll. Four left, and six enlisted during 'the session, leaving 110 at the end of the year, as follows:— Seniors, 4 men and 52 women; juniors, 10 men and 54 women. Of lit "A." fitudents 44 had been pupil teachers and 70 probationers. The various districts were represented as follows:—Wellington 35 students, Wajiganui 25, Hawkes Bay IG, Taranaki 9, Marlborough 10, Nelson 15, Westland 3, Grey 3, Canterbury 2, Southland 2. From the examination returns it would be seen that about 15 per cent, of the students were working seriously for a degree, and of these only two specialising for the science degree. "If the number of science graduates is too small (personally I think it is), further exemptions than those now allowed by the Training College regulations must be granted to approved students., Secondary school conditions are still such that too many of our brighter students are practically compelled to take a purely literary course, and, as a result, it is extremely difficult to find sufficient teachers for the distriot high school work, jvhere a good knowledge of science is esessential." r,

Fifty-six students completed their course of training in December, and the general results of external examinations and the Training College examinations were as follow:—D certificate 1, D and partial C 19, C 34, B 2. As in the previous year, the bulk of serious teaching practice was placed in the students' second year (approximately two-thirds). Early in the year six associated teachers were appointed, and each of the senior students spent a fortnight -with one of these teachers. The result was so successful that it is hoped to extend the practice. During February the usual school for uncertificated teachers was held in the college.
