TROUBLESOME SAILOR
Eyery week or so the military guard on duty at the wharves has trouble with members of the crews of vessels, generally those from overseas, and in most cases the offenders are firemen, who frequently show dislike of anything pertaining to discipline ashore. A fireman, Timothy Stone, aged 22, was. charged before Mr. S; El M'Carthy, S.M., at the Magistrate's Coart to-day, with/ assaulting Sergeant-Major Vanderluys, and also with obstructing him in the course of his duty. Stone went to the guardroom on' the wharf, and asked permission to go on board another shiiJ to see a friend, but this was refused. Accused then went outside and commenced abusing the sentry, and, later, when the ser-geant-major came outside, used abusive language to him. Stone then followed him about the wharf 'as the guard was being changed, and finally accused attempted to force his way through the gate on the wharf-head. A rough-and-tumble followed, and the guard which was coming off -duty arrested the accused. Stone was remanded from this morning's sittings in order that enquiries might be made as to whether the master of his vessel required him. The captain refused to take him back on the vessel, and Stone was this afternoon sentenced to three months' imprisonment.
