MEETING OF BOROUGH COUNCIL.

The monthly meeting of . tlie Eastbourne Borough Council was attended by the Mayor (Mr. Levi), and Councillors Bennett, Macpherson, Morris,. Shand, Cook, Marquis, and Chittey. An apjplpgy for absence was received from Councillor Bussell.

The Mayor reported that representations had been made to the Government, through the Under-Secrptary for Lands, for the' Education Reserves adjoining the Eastbourne Domain to be vested in the v •Eastbourne Borough Council as a scenic 1 reserve.

It was decided to 'grant the Lady Liverpool Patriotic Committee the use ,of the council room on Tuesday afternoons without charge, , subject' to the hall not being required for any other purpose. ! The. Mayor reported that at a public meeting convened fpr that purpose on the 13th inst. it had been decided to form a Municipal Volunteer Fire Brigade, chiefly for the purpose of dealing with bush and scrub fires. It had been suggested, however, that the brigade might with advantage extend its scope of operations, and a sub-committee had been eet up for the purpose of making enquiries into the question of subsidy by the insurance companies, and -also as to the. cost of chemical fire-extinguishing, appliances. „ The Works Committee's report stated that extensive repairs had been effected to the soutli end of the main-road, and that a double line of scrub fpnee had been erected along tlig beach at the bottom of Nikau-street, for the purpose of arresting the sand-drift which was taking place there.

A drain had also been constructed at the top end of Nikau-street,. for the purpose of carrying oft surface water, and the work of erecting a footbridge across the watercourse in Villeneuve-street, at the intersection of Majre-street, had been put in hand.

Accounts amounting to £1521 2s 8d were passed for payment.
