' The Hon. J. A. Hanan left for Napier and Gisborne to-day in fulfilment of engagements relating to the Napier Main School site and certain Native schools in the East Coast district.

Mr. C. M. Luke is at present on a visit to Gisborne in connection with the war work of the V.M.C.A. ■

Mr. Guy Morris has been appointed Resident Commissioner at Niue_, Cook Islands. Mr. Morris served with the New Zealand Expeditionary, Forces in France, was wounded, and returned to, the Dominion.

Dr. E. Boxer, of Hastings, has been appointed acting-president of the New Zealand Returned Soldiers' Association, in. succession to Mr. James D. Harper, who has accepted a seat on the War Pensions Board. Dr. Boxer left New Zealand with the Main Body as adjutant to the first New Zealand ambulance.

Private J. M'Elligott, son of Mr. T. M'Elligott, Hawkestone-crescent, has been awarded tho Croix.de Guerre. Private M'Elligott, who is 21 years old, went away with the 12th Reinforcements. A.-brother, Sergeant T. M'Elligott, who distinguished himself by winning the gold medal for cHampion signaller in Egypt, was wounded recently. Both were educated at ,the Marist Brothers' School, Boulcott-street.

News has been received of the death in Scotland of an old Wellington identity, Mr. James Mackay. In the early days, Mr. Mackay kept a furniture shop in Brandon-street, but sold out many years ago, and since then lived a retired life. He was a familiar figure on the Thorndon Bowling Club's green, and at the Central Club, and spent most of his spare time travelling between New Zealand and the Old Country. He died in Scotland, the country of his birth.
