The news of the death at Wanganui on Sunday night of Captain Steve Thorns, master of the coastal steamer Huia, came as a surprise to shipping people. Captain Thorns had been suffering from an abscess at the back of his head for some time, and on Tuesday last he underwent an operation in a private hospital. It was generally understood that he was progressing 'satisfactorily, but Jit the week-end he collapsed. For some time the late Captain Thorns was connected with the whaling industry at Port, Underwood. He was in command of the trawler Energy, and for a. period acted as mate on tho Awahou. Captain Thorns, who was 43 years o! age and a, widower, leaves two children —a daughter and a sou. The body will be brought to Wellington, where the interment will take place.
