The news of the death at Wanganui on Sunday night of Captain Steve Thorns, master of the coastal steamer Huia, came as a surprise to shipping people. Captain Thorns had been suffering from an abscess at the back of his head for some time, and on Tuesday last he underwent an operation in a private hospital.
