McGregor, chief officer on tho Kittawa, has come ashore ' MISHAP TO WAKATERB Tho steamer Wakatere is to be laid Up in 'Auckland for a. period as a result of an acci-dent-to her machinery. The breakdown occurred on Thursday last, when just as the vessel had gone alongside the Central wharf, tho low-pressure steam chest exploded, shattering the cover, and doing other damage to the chest itself. The cover of the steam chest measures about ten square feet, and is a very solid steel casting about two inches thick, reinforced with thick ribs or flanges. En"Sneers who have examined the broken machinery .ftate .that they cannot account for the breaking of this apparently extra strong partof the engine. It will be necessary to have a new casting made, and this work will occupy over n month. During the Wakatere's ■Inactivity tho Waiotabi will take over the 'Auckland-Thames running. The Wakatere has teen in this service for about 21 years When about five miles out from Wanganui Wi Friday last the coastal steamer Tainui fractured her tail shaft. The predicament of tho vessel, which was bound for Lyttelton, ■was noticed from the shore, and the Mana was sent to her help. The Tainui was soon towed safely into port. It is probable that tho vessel will call at Wellington or Lyttelton ior repairs . . ■ On Saturday next the Mararoa will not receive any cargo, as she is to go on the slip at Lyttelton for cleaning ajid painting on Monday next The Hinemoa, which left for the Cook Strait lighthouses early this morning, will eject the followin" changes of lighthouse men:—Principal Keener Hart will transfer from Somes Island to Capo Palliner lighthouse, in place of Principal Keeper McLeish, who is to move to the Puysegur Point lighthouse. He will succeed Principal Keeper Pearce, who will transfer to gomes Island
