Reuters correspondent at French Headqua.nei'6 states that the object of the recent big raid on the French front in Champagne was to bite off- a troublesome 6alient between Tahure and the rugged mass at Bui.te dv Mesnil, against which the French, were 'brought to a standstill in September of 1915. The.task was a most difficult one, as the salient lay in a saucer among Jiea,vily, armed overlooking hills. The attack was preceded by a heavy bombardment, and met with opposition, which it proved capable of checking till it reached its objective. The operation was completed in an hour. The French and American artillery worked with splendid precision.
