RIFLE-SHOOTING

WELLINGTON CHALLENGE SHIELD The weather conditions for the Challenge Shield match of tho Wellington City and Suburban Rifle Club Union on Saturday afternoon were favourable. At intervals the light was poor, but there was an absence of the usual trickiness in the breezes which the rifle range at Miramar usually stores up for marksmen. Each of the four Wellington clubs was represented. The concluding stage at 600 yards resolved itself into a struggle between Suburbs and Karori. Both teams shot well, but Karori was unequal to the task of recovering its lost * position, and the Suburbs Club, improving its lead by seven points, secured the shield by a onei point-per-man margin. The Petone Club produced at this last range through Rifleman Ryan the best range-score sfov the day. At the conclusion of the match, congratulatory speeches were made in favour of the winning club and the run-ners-.up. The veteran marksman (G. Halliday) was also congratulated from all sides on his excellent aggregate score. The arrangements for the match were capably handled by President Rabe, of ihe Old Navals Club, while the supervision by President M'Donald, of the Highland Club, of the registration of scores from the trench effected an added element of smoothness.
