SAWMILL ENGINE-DRIVERS

Awards iev industries or trades were discussed at ' the Conciliation Council this morning. Mr. Grenfell, fox- the emplpyerG, asked that . country sawmills where the timber-workers award covered engine-drivers should be exempt from the engine-drivers award. Mr. Read, 1 for the union, drew attention to the fact that the award which included- engine-drivers was made in 1912, and provided for- wages which were ridiculous at the present time. Mr. Grenfell replied that the Timberworkers' Union had its proper remedy by applying for a new award, but the employers did not wish to have single employers in the industry covered by a different award. Mr. Read stated that the position wae now that the Timberworkers' Union in recent awards had not covered the country sawmills, and it was not fair that conditions should remain as of pld because, of -Ehat fact. Enginedrivers in the sawmills were members of the Engine-drivers' Union, and not of the Timber-workers' Union. Mr. Grenfell said.. that, if tliere were separate provisions ' covering single worHfcrs. 1 ia an industry the whole of the work might be thrown out of gear. Mi. Re»A characterised this as a supposititdus'case, and not likely to occur in actual practice, as the union had a sense of its responsibility. It was decided to refer tho "point'to the Arbitration Court. :
