NEW MINISTER OF LANDS

SWORN IN AT CHRISTCHUROH.

<BI TELEGRAPH.—PRESS ASSOCIATION.) GHBISTCHXTRCH, This Day. Mr. D. H. Guthrie, who has been appointed' Minister of Lands, arrived here to-day and was sworn in by the Govern-or-General this afternoon as a member of the Executive Council.

Mr. ,D. H. Guthrie, M.P. for Oroua, is a native of Queen's County, Ireland. He came to New Zealand in 1876, and was for some years a school teacher under the Wanganui Education Board, in which capacity he laboured at Wanganui, Longburn, and Palmerston North. He left the teaching profession in 1880, and took to farming, which occupation he has followed up to the present time. In local public life he has been .well known throughout the West Coast of the North Island, both as a member of the Wanganui .Education Board and in connection with the affairs of the Kiwitea County Council.

Mr. Guthrie -was elected member for Groua in 1908, and has represented that district ever fiince. Since 1911 he lias acted as Whip of the Reform Party, and latterly of the National Government. By virtue of hisi experience as a farmer, Mr. Guthrie's advice and assistance ■will be specially valuable in connection with land and agricultural! questions.
