Thefts from the clothing of bathers have been rife on Petone beach. The latest instance was the. theft yesterday of a pocket book containing the sum of £1 5s 6d from the coat of a visitor. As a result of enquiries, the police caused a; boy of 124 years to appear at ths Juvenile Court this morning; charged with the theft. He-was convicted and discharged, and his brother ordered to refund the money. The bench/was occupied by Messrs- A. Anderson and J^ Wakeham, J.P.'s. '■■'*. ' "
Mr. TV D. Taylor, who for five years has been editor of the. Ashlburton Mail and Guardian, was tendered a civid farewell hit the Ashburton Borough. Council Chambers on Saturday, prior to his leaving to take. up. an important position in the Defence Office in Wei lington. The Mayor (Mr. B. Galbraith), on behalf,'of numerous subscribers, presented Mr. Taylor , with a fTamed il- ,« luminated address and substantial purse of sovereigns. At tho Ashburton Mail and Guardian Office, earlier iv the day, Mr. Taylor was the recipient of a. goid Watch, suitably inscribed, and a icwe of pipes from the staff.
