Dr. G. Morrison (Political Adviser to the Chinese Government] has a sense of humour. During the civic reception tendered to him this morning, he smilingly referred to the possibility of his getting "swelled head" by reason of all the nice things which had been said about him. He related an incident, however, which, he said, had effectually prevented him from being subject to that malady. Many years ago, when he was trying to get a position on one of the London papers, he had nothing to recommend him but a, book he had written concerning some of his experiences. His great friend, the late Phil May, was doing all he could to help him, and one day he, Phil May, and Mrs. May were dining with the editor of one of the leading magazines. "I suppose you have read Morrison's book?" said Phil May to the great man. "Oh, yes, I have indeed," was the re.ply. "And what did you think of it?" was the next query put by Phil May on behalf of his friend. "Oil, I was delighted with it; indeed, I was fascinated with it," said the editor! The word, "fascinated," coming from such an 1 important person, delighted Morrison, who felt very proud, and began to have rosy hopes of the future. A few minutes later the editor and Phil May left the room. Outside. the door the former said: "Who was that man you introduced to me just now?" "Oh, that's Morrison," replied May. "And what book did you say he wrote?' was the editor's final query. "That brought me to my level," said Dr. Morrison, amidst much laughter. .'
