AUSTRALIAN NAVY
In connection with the increases in the pay of officers and men of the sea-going* forces of the Commonwealth navy, ani nounoed by the Minister for the Navy to take effect from Ist January, 1918 (says the Melbourne Argus), new arrangements have been made, which, it is anticipated by the Navy Department, will considerably improve the conditions of service in the Royal Australian Navy. Men will in futuro bo signed on for seven j'eurs, and it is understood that a project is under consideration for the formation of a fleet reserve from fit men discharged after the war, and time-expired. Also in. many ways attempts appear to have been made in the new 6cheme to make the lot of the married man in the sea-going service much easier than it has beeu in the past, which, looking to the futuro of Australia^ appears a step in the right direction:
