SENSATION IN PARIS
ARREST OF M. CAILLAUX
FOLLOWING DISCOVERY OP IMPORTANT DOCUMENTS

PARIS, 15th January. The arrest of M. Caillaux, ex-Premier, against whom a prosecution for treason has been pending for some weeks, has caused a sensation in the city. It is understood that the Italian Government forwarded to Paris, important documents .found in a safe at Florence rented in the name of Renouard, the name under which M. Caillaux travelled in Italy. Baron Sonnino, the Italian Foreign Minister, forwarded the documents to M. Clemenceau, the French Premier, who will publish them shortly.
A Bill was introduced in the French Chamber of Deputies, in December, impeaching M. Caillaux, who will be indicted before a coart-martial on a charge of treason. M. Caillaux was Premier of Franco at the time of the dispute with Germany oyer-the Agadir incident, in connection with which his conduct was much criticised. His name has also been associated with the charges against M. Malvy, formerly Minister for the Interior, who has been accused of handing to Germany plans for the defence of the Chemin dcs Dames. Recently the Italian Government was said_ to bo stirred in the highest degree by the charge against M. Caillaux of carrying on a campaign in Rome in favour of an agreement between Italy, Germany, and France against England and Russia. Representatives of the two last-named Governments acquainted the Italian Government of what wag occurring. Baron Sonnino intimated his desire to be relieved of the necessity of expelling M. Cailleaus from Italy,
