THE TURF

NOTES AND COMMENTS

(ST. "SIR LANCELOT.")

ANSWER TO CORRESPONDENT.

" V.R. " (Lower Hutt).—Few of the Martians have raced, over hurdles. Zeus is one of the first of them to be tried as a jumper.

The Summer .Meeting of the Wood■^iUe District Jockey Club will be held to-morrow and Thursday. Large fields are engaged, but there will probably, be a few withdrawals of horses that failed to show any form at Feilding. ■.'-'? Pennon, the • Feilding winner, is not now eligible to compete in the ; Maiden Plate, in which her stable mate (Zela) will ran. Matilda (third at Feilding) is to start. There are several two-year-olds engaged,; including Killowen and Kilhope—two of F. Davis's team—and Thebes, one of K. Quinlivan's lot ' TiTl? ere are twenty-nve acceptors in the Jiack Hurdles, one mile and three-quar-ters, including Paparess ' (who was successful on her first appearance at Ashhurst) .< and Calais (who won at Feilding). The latter will carry 9.13. He lias to meet Tatimi, Kohinahina, and others who were not among the runners at Feilding. Calais came at the right end when he scored on Saturday, and should again show up prominently. Mystified and Cello, who finished third and fourth respectively in the Apiti Hack Handicap at Feilding, are in the Grandstand Hack Handicap, seven fur-' longs. So is Paddington Green, who had a bad run in Saturday's race. Compel ■ the Waverley winner, is in, also Clavis, one of/11. Brough's Hawera team. If reserved for this event Matilda might have a better chance than in the Maiden, in. which she will have to concede-the two-year-olds some weight. Three Auckland: .Cup candidates in Snub, Red Ribbon, and Multiply were paid up for. in the principal event' Devotion will only meet Chortle on 41b worse terms, and if started ehould again finish in front of, the top-weight. Others engaged that were among the also started division at Feilding are Square Deal and Rangitero/ who have not been up long, and will improve with a race: or two; Lady Louisa, who!is at her best in soft going ; Dribble, Midnight Star,. Arrowfield, and Botanist. Devotion ran T ell L at Feilding> a"d appears to hold the horses she beat there safely. If she is not started Perfidy and, Flash Lady are a couple, of light-weighte that may trouble the top-weight.. ;'••■•■ Rude, who was in the finish of the Cheltenham. Handicap at Feilding, ie in the Flying: Handicap, run.over the same distance, also Pennon, who will have to carry 7.13. Her rider may claim apprentice allowance, which will reduce the weight to- 7.8. ( Form at Feilding points to' Rude and Pennon as being likely to rim prominently. Cooing was unlucky at the start of the race ehe contested at Feilding. ■' In the Electric Handicap, five fur-" longs, Namur, if started, will have to carry 8.4 and meet Ayah (third at Feildni(?)'on nearly a stone worse terms.' This pair should again finish in front of the horses, they defeated last Saturday. Inah and Lightning are recent winners with form to recommend ■'{hem. Interlude should shape better than at Feilding, and Sheila, who is going to Ellerslie for the Railway, is entitled to.a "place among the probables. None of those engaged in the Welter Handicap, one mile and 170 .yards, incurred penalties at Feilding. . Compel and Clarissa are in this event, also Grand Duchy (one of F; Davis's. team). The'latteris m with the minimum weight and 'therefore does j not want to be anything out of the ordinary to run prominently. Grand Duchy is owned by F. Davis,'and as a two-year-old randsecond to Beltane at Dannevirke. .

Sweet Tipperary and Ohiwia, placegetters in the Kiwitea Welter at Feiiding, are in the Borougli Handicap run over a similar journey. Of those that finished behind them Probation (who was put on her head at Feiiding) and Thoughtful, who run fourth, may do the best of them. \

Mr. W. Richmond, who has been on ft" holiday .trip to Sydney nntl Melbourne, expects to. be at Woodville to witness the racing there. The Marton Jockey Club has issued an attractive programme for its summer meeting to be held on New Year's Day. Hie open events are the Marton Cup-, of 500 ' soys, one. mile and a quarter; Railway Handicap, of 300 soys, six furlongsand Stewards' Welte< Handicap, of 225 soys, eight furlongs and a half. Ke«l has been engaged to ride Devotion, Probation, Cooing, Matilda. Ayah, 1 and one of F Davis's team in the Maiden. _ Caretaker R. Wooding is having come trouble to keep the Otaki tracks in order, on account of the stones working their way through. There are a good many horses in work, at Otaki at ths present time, and trainers would be assisted- if they could get a gallop on the outeide of the course proper once or twice a week prior to leaving for a meeting. w F T-l eT iook Tree Lucerne through to WoodTille, where he is engaged on the second day. Egypt may also be seen out on the concluding day of the meeting named. .
