NEW GAINS AT LANGEMARCK

3243 PRISONERS IN FOUR DAYS

(AUSTRALIAN-NEW ZEALAND CABLE ASSOCIATION AND REUTER.) LONDON, 24th September. Sir Douglas Haig reports : We completely repulsed the enemy's storm troops north-west of Langemarck. English Rifle regiments then attacked and captured, after sharp fighting, a further portion of the defences in this neighbourhood, with a number of prisoners. The organisation of the newly-captured positions on the rest of the battle-front is proceeding. We repulsed at attack eastward of Villeret (east of Peronne). We have taken prisoner 3243 of the enemy, including 80 officers, on the Ypres battle-front since the commencement of -our attack on 20th September. Our aeroplanes yesterday dropped bombs on the enemy's billets, hutments, and aerodromes. Three tons were dropped at night-time on the Boulers, Menin, and Wervicq railway stations. The enemy dropped a few bombs at midday, but did little damage. We brought down nine of the enemy's machines. Two of ours are missing.
