SAMOAN TRADE

NEW ZEALAND'S POSITION.

An extract from a despatch received through the Minister of Defence, from the Administrator of Samoa, relating to trad* relations between New Zealand and Samoa, was considered at yesterday's meeting of the Central 1 Chamber of Commerce. The substance of the communication (which haa been published previously) was that New Zealand houses did not appear to be making any serious effort to retain the trade, which was being secured by Australia.

Mr. R. Hall stated that the principal reason for this was that New Zealand could not take the great quantities of fruit that the Islands could supply, whereas Sydney and Melbourne could 1 take any quantity and thus adjuet the balance of trade.

Mr. J. F. Atkin* said that Australia was also in a better position from the point of view of sending travellers to Samoa, and could also make certain of securing freight space. It was decided to forward-the extract to members of the Chamber.
