A MISUNDERSTANDING

THE PROPOSED REPRESENTATIVE RUGBY MATCH. >

An article in the Chriatchurch Sun of Saturday alleges a great want of courtesy on the part of the Wellington Rugby Union in regard to a proposal for an inter-provincial match. The Sun states that the proposal was made entirely with the idea of helping tfche Wellington Union | in its efforts to retain Athletic Park, and proceeds as follows:— . ; ! "On the 12th of this month the secretary to the Canterbury Rugby Union sent the following telegram to the secretary of the Wellington Union:—'My union, provided our competition ends Saturday, prepared to meet representative. Wellington team here Saturday week, net proceeds for Wellington Union ground fund. Reply to-day, giving your executive's opinion.' "That telegram was not. answered. On 17th September an urgent telegram was sent to Wellington, asking: 'Can your representatives play here Saturday?' Still no reply was received. So, on the following day, a telegram was sent in these terms: 'Kindly reply agreeable 1 or otherwise to telegrams of 12th and 17th instant re match.' ■ "At last a reply was received from Wellington. It was' but a curt telegram, as follows: 'Sorry we have no vacant date.' Nothing more has been received from AVellington—not even a word of thanks for the Canterbury Union's offer." The matter was- referred to Mr. D. ■ D. Weir, chairman of the Management Committee .of the Wellington Union, by a Po3t reporter. Mr. Weir said that, 1 so far as the Wellington Committee is aware, only one telegram was received from Canterbury, and that was replied to on the day it was received. If any other telegram had been received the committee, as a committee, was not aware of it. He regretted very much ibhat any apparent discourtesy should have been shown to the Canterbury Union, ■whose offer was much appreciated. Full enquiries would be made at the weekly meeting of the committee to-morrow night, and an explanation forwarded to Canterbury.
