A TALE OF OLD JAPAN.

.It ia exactly nineteen years since Samuel ■ Coleridge Taylor's best-known •work "Hiawatha's Wedding Feast" was .first performed at the Royal Albert Hall, London, by the Royal Choral Society. On Tuesday week, 2nd October, in the Wellington Town Hall, "A Tale of Old Japan," described by the late Mr. Taylor as his masterpiece, will be produced by the Choral Union, under the direction of Air. Robert. Parker. Although only 37 when he died- Mr. Taylor put his name to more than 200 compositions. A strong cast of soloists has (been engaged for this work. Miss Helen Gardner, of Dunedin, will undertake the Soprano solos, Mrs. Maurice Jones, of Auckland, the contralto, Mr. G. W. Eiby the tenor, and Mr. Frank Charlton the baritone. The box plan open* at the Bristol at 9 o'clock to-morrow morning. Full rehearsals will be held to-morrow (Tuesday) and Friday evenings, in St. John's Hall, at 8 o'clock.

The final screening of the splendid war picture, "Sons of the Empire," was made on Saturday at the Town Hall. The season, which has been under the auspices of the V.M.C.A., has been a successful one.
